Art in the Park Launch Walking and Cycling Festival

Art in the Park

Art in the Park have announced the newest addition to their wide ranging programme of events. East Peak Outdoors, set to run from 19 to 23 June 2013, is to be a festival of walking, cycling and horse riding, celebrating the outstanding natural environment surrounding the East Peak area of Penistone, Denby Dale and Bradfield.

Funded by the East Peak Innovation Partnership (EPIP), East Peak Outdoors is a continuation of the work began in 2010 that Art in the Park have been carrying out in the region to help the East Peak area flourish through celebration and artistic expression. The highly successful, ‘Villages of Poetry’ Project, has seen free art classes and the development of several poetry trails in the area.

The group are hoping to bring together outdoor pursuits with the arts in some events, featuring activities such as creative workshops, including poetry and creative writing; themed walks, encouraging participants to contemplate the local folklore, heritage and traditions; and art events including opportunities to work with professional artists.

However, what makes this festival so unique is that Art in the Park wants it to be community led: to be based on what local people want and run by them where possible. To this end, they have devised an online survey, available to access via http://www.artinthepark.org.uk/Whatson and open to all, so you can offer ideas as well as put yourself forward to run activities during the festival.

Cassie Kill, Project Manager for Art in the Park said, ‘The natural environment in the East Peak is stunning and that makes it a great inspiration for both outdoor pursuits and creative arts. Through East Peak Outdoors, we hope to support local people and community groups to share their love of the area through walks, rides and other activities
