Good news has brightened economic prospects in the Peak District and Derbyshire – where tourism generated a massive £1.7 billion in 2011.
New research reveals that the industry’s contribution to the local economy rose by seven per cent on the 2010 figure of just over £1.6 billion – much higher than the two per cent increase in the East Midlands region overall.
And there’s more cheer on the employment front – the number of people working in tourism rose from around 25,000 in to just over 27,000 last year, an increase of eight per cent.
Tourist numbers over the same period also increased by eight per cent, from around 36 million in 2010 to almost 39 million last year.
“Naturally we’re delighted that the value of tourism to the Peak District and Derbyshire economy is continuing to grow year on year, and that there was such a marked rise in its performance from 2010 to 2011,” said David James, Chief Executive of Visit Peak District and Derbyshire, the area’s official tourist board.
“It’s especially encouraging at a time when the economic recession is still biting deep and shows little sign of slowing – and we’re particularly pleased at the news that 2,000 jobs have been created in the sector in just one year.
“And it underlines the fact that there’s never been a better time for business and other organisations to share in the current and future economic benefits that tourism is bringing to the area by becoming a member of the tourist board.
“Businesses and individuals keen to back our work can also join our Patrons’ Scheme, launched by the Duke of Devonshire, at our Annual Conference in May.”
