NEW LEARNING AWARD ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO DISCOVER THE PEAK DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK

PEAK DISTRICT NATIONAL PARK AUTHORITY

Seeing the Peak District as an outdoor classroom is the inspiration for a new award that encourages people of all ages to study the national park.

The National Park Authority’s learning and discovery team has set up the award to motivate people to find out about the Peak District’s special qualities and share their knowledge.

The award is being launched on Sunday July 29, 10.30am to 4pm, at Castleton visitor centre to celebrate the start of National Parks Week.

To gain the Peak District Award, candidates need to:
• complete an easy application process to say what topic they will study, such as wildlife, plants, geology or local history
• keep a record of what they do, such as a diary, scrap book, video or blog
• spend time learning about their chosen subject
• make at least one visit to the Peak District National Park

Sarah Wilks, the award coordinator, said: “We want people to discover what’s special about the national park. There is no age limit, we are looking for individuals, families or groups to sign up and have fun finding out about the Peak District.

“It can include going on a ranger guided walk, taking part in a learning and discovery event in the school holidays, volunteering for conservation, community, cultural or arts projects, or visiting a heritage site.”

The award has been successfully tested by local school children working with national park rangers on a variety of conservation activities. The scheme is now being rolled out for people of all ages.
